Workshop on Multiple Intelligences
Multiple Intelligences, this was the topic for the third parent workshop. To understand this first we need to know what is intelligence?
“Ability to think abstractly”
Lewis Terman
“Ability to adapt to one’s surroundings”
Jean Piaget
“Ability to act purposefully, to think rationally and deal effectively with the environment.”
David Weehsler
To help parents understand their children’s intelligences and styles of learning .Mr. Waqas explained theory of multiple intelligence by Howard Gardner. He explained
that Dr Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults.
1. Linguistic Intelligence
2. Logical Mathematical Intelligence
3. Spatial Intelligence
4. Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence
5. Musical Intelligence
6. Interpersonal Intelligence
7. Intrapersonal Intelligence
8. Naturalist Intelligence
9. Existential Intelligence
There are many people who believe that there should be a ninth intelligence catering people with the sixth sense (wondering smart and spiritually smart).
The workshop leader helped parents to understand their child’s hidden abilities so the inner potentials can be enhanced and utilized in the best possible ways. If parents know where their child’s interest lies they can help him in a better way to choose the future path in which he will succeed.
He said our schools and culture focus on linguistic and logical mathematical smart people. And we ignore other gifted, intelligent children around us who can become famous architects, musicians, therapists, painters, actors and sports persons .
Unfortunately they are not identified at the right time and many talents are wasted unidentified. Infact many of these kids are often labeled as learning disabled, ADD attention deficit disorder or simply underachievers, when their unique ways of thinking and learning are not addressed at home and at school.
The theory of multiple intelligence proposes a major transformation of the learning schools. it suggest that the lessons should be presented in a wide variety of ways using music, cooperative learning, art activities, role play, multimedia field trips etc
